K-12 Outreach Activities

MarTREC sponsored the development of six traffic sensor build kits and associated lesson plans.  Each of the two lesson plans describes how inductive loop sensor technology can be used to monitor the use of inland waterway ports.  Students get to build mini-inductive loops and measure how inductive changes can be used to determine the body characteristics of a truck. The activities are hands on and introduce the importance of our inland waterway system.  The final report describing this project can be found here: Interdisciplinary Education Outreach with Traffic Sensor Build Kits

Teaching Materials

Teaching materials are available for middle school and high school audiences and include instructions to use our kit for building a loop detector.

The Hernandez Research Team participated in the STEM Girls Day “Girls Just Wan’na Have Fun” hosted by the University of Arkansas. We hosted 60+ high school girls and teachers from Northwest Arkansas. Girls used online traffic control simulation games to explore traffic engineering concepts. The materials were prepared using the University of Minnesota’s STREET Simulation Tools.

The Hernandez Research Team participated in GirlTREC hosted by MarTrec in July 2017 and again in 2019. We hosted 30+ middle school girls and engaged them in traffic signal timing simulation and live role-play activities. Materials prepared for the event can be downloaded and used for outreach and educational activities.
